Samsung Electronics, the biggest handset phone manufacturer has begun the process of ditching Android OS in favor of their own Operating System called Tizen. Tizen OS which has been running their line of Smart TVs and smart watches is an open source, light-weight operating system just like Android.
According their official blog post title “Tizen in the Big Picture“, the new OS will feature prominently in most of their new devices set for release this year. According to their CEO BK Yoon, within five years time all their devices will be running on Tizen OS, giving a clear indication that the Company is ready to part ways completely with Android OS.
But Why Tizen?
According to Samsung, Tizen is much lighter than other Operating system as it requires less processing power and memory thus ensuring faster device speeds while consuming the least energy.
Samsung Z1
To mark this important transition, the giant device manufacturer has launched its first smartphone device, Samsung Z1, running the Tizen Operating System. The Samsung Z1 is a low-spec device meant for the lower-end market. The device, which is only available in India will cost 5,700 Indian Rupees (about USD92).
The Z1 has a 4-inch, 800 x 480(WVGA), 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 0.75GB of RAM, and a 3.1 megapixel rear camera. The 3G Dual-SIM enabled handset comes with 4GB internal memory, a 1500mAh removable battery and support for Bluetooth 4.
